Algae’s "Starvation Diet": How Phosphate Removers Work
Think of phosphates as an "all-you-can-eat buffet" for algae. Derived from fertilizer drift, decaying leaves, and bather waste, phosphates accumulate in your water, acting as a high-potency fertilizer that allows algae to survive even in chlorinated water.

Phosphate removers act as the ultimate diet plan. These formulas typically utilize Lanthanum, a rare-earth element that acts as a phosphate magnet. When introduced to the water, the Lanthanum seeks out and bonds with dissolved orthophosphates. This reaction is instantaneous and creates a visible result: the two chemicals fuse into a solid white particle (precipitate).

This process often turns the water temporarily cloudy—this is a good sign! That cloudiness is the physical manifestation of phosphates being pulled out of solution. Once solid, these particles are large enough to be trapped by your filter. By running your filtration system, you physically move the algae food from the pool into the filter, where it can be backwashed or rinsed away, leaving your sanitizer to work efficiently without interference.

Why did my pool turn cloudy immediately after use?
This is normal and indicates the product is working. The remover reacts with dissolved phosphates to form insoluble white solids (precipitate). The higher your phosphate levels, the cloudier the water will become. This haze will clear as your filter catches the particles.

Does this product kill algae?
No. Phosphate removers are a preventative measure, not an algaecide. They remove the food source (nutrient starvation) to prevent future growth. If you currently have green water, treat the algae with shock and algaecide first, then use a phosphate remover once the algae is dead.

When is it safe to swim?
The product itself is non-toxic, but you should not swim while the water is cloudy. Cloudiness acts as a visibility hazard, preventing you from seeing the bottom of the pool or a swimmer in distress. You may swim once the water is clear.

Why is my filter pressure rising so fast?
The product turns dissolved gasses/liquids into solids. Your filter is rapidly "catching" all this new debris. It is standard protocol to watch your pressure gauge and backwash or clean your filter cartridges 24–48 hours after treatment to permanently remove the phosphates from the system.

How do I know if I need this?
You cannot see phosphates with the naked eye. We recommend using a digital test kit or strip to measure your levels. Ideal ranges are below 200 ppb (parts per billion). Treatment is usually required if levels exceed 500 ppb.
