Enzymes: What They Do for Pool and Spa Water
Pool enzymes are biological catalysts that break down non-living organic contaminants in your water, mostly oily bather waste like body oils, sweat, sunscreen, lotions, and cosmetics. They work the same way enzymes in laundry detergent break down grease: by chemically cleaving large organic molecules into smaller, simpler pieces that are easier for your sanitizer to oxidize. Enzymes are a supplement to good chemistry, not a replacement for it. (They're best at oils and dissolved organics. Physical debris like leaves and pollen still needs skimming, vacuuming, and filtration.)
What enzymes do
- Break down organic oils and waste that otherwise build up, especially the greasy "bathtub ring" or scum line at the waterline.
- May reduce the load on your chlorine. Oils and organics in the water consume sanitizer. By digesting some of that material, enzymes may reduce chlorine demand and help your sanitizer focus on its real job of killing bacteria and algae. Results vary with bather load and water balance.
- Cut down on scum lines and the oily film caused by accumulated bather waste.
- May reduce maintenance (less scrubbing of the waterline and fewer surprise demands on your chemistry).
What enzymes do NOT do
- They don't sanitize. Enzymes don't kill bacteria or algae. You still need chlorine, bromine, or another sanitizer. Enzymes only handle the non-living organic load.
- They don't remove phosphates. Enzymes and phosphate removers are different products for different problems. Enzymes digest organics; phosphate removers strip out the orthophosphates that feed algae.
- They aren't a reliable odor cure. Pool odors usually come from combined chlorine (chloramines) or algae, not simply organic buildup. Enzymes may help by reducing some bather-waste precursors, but proper sanitizer levels and oxidation are the real fix.
- They don't replace your filter or balanced water. They make both work better, but they're an add-on.
Enzymes vs. clarifier: what's the difference?
They solve different problems. A clarifier gathers tiny suspended particles into larger clumps so your filter can catch them. It's about clearing cloudy water. Enzymes chemically digest organic oils and waste, so they're about reducing oily load and scum. Greasy waterline ring and a heavy oil load? That's an enzyme job. Cloudy from fine debris? A clarifier may help, but if the cloudiness is from algae or a sanitation problem, fix your chlorine and filtration first. Clarifiers are optional and can foul a filter if overused.
When enzymes are especially useful
- Heavy bather loads: lots of swimmers means lots of sunscreen, sweat, and oils.
- Hot tubs and spas, where high temperatures and small water volumes concentrate body oils fast, producing scum lines and foam.
- Pools with persistent waterline rings that keep coming back no matter how much you scrub.
How to use them
Enzymes are typically added on a regular maintenance schedule: an initial dose followed by weekly or monthly maintenance doses, depending on the product and bather load. Follow the label. A few practical notes:
- High chlorine degrades enzymes. Don't add enzymes during or right after shocking. Wait until free chlorine returns to your normal target range for your CYA level, since a strong oxidizer will break down the enzyme product before it can work. (This matters most when CYA is low, where a given chlorine level is more aggressive.)
- Enzymes are compatible with chlorine, bromine, and salt systems at normal sanitizer levels, though they slowly degrade over time.
- They're not a one-time fix. Organics are added continuously, so ongoing dosing keeps the benefit.
