How It Works

A pool pump is a centrifugal pump. Water enters at the center of the spinning impeller, the vanes accelerate it outward, and it exits into the volute (the spiral housing) which turns that speed into pressure. That pressure is what pushes water through your filter, your heater, and back to the pool.

The motor makes rotation. The impeller is the part that turns rotation into flow. Pump performance leans on it heavily, which is why a part with no moving pieces of its own causes so many service calls.

The Clog

The strainer basket catches leaves and the big stuff. What slips past is the small stuff: pine needles, hair, seed pods, leaf fragments, sand, grit. Those wedge into the impeller vanes, which are narrow passages, and gradually strangle the flow.

Signs pointing at the impeller:

  • Weak or no return flow while the motor runs normally and sounds fine
  • Filter pressure below your normal baseline
  • Poor skimmer suction
  • Pump primes, but flow never comes up to where it should be

Before you open anything, rule out the easy stuff: a full strainer basket, a valve someone left closed, a low water level, a suction-side air leak, or a multiport handle sitting on the wrong setting.

Reading the Pressure Gauge

This is the part worth understanding, because it separates two problems that feel identical.

A dirty filter restricts water leaving the pump, so pressure climbs above normal. A clogged impeller restricts water reaching the filter, so pressure falls below normal. Bad flow either way, opposite gauge readings, completely different fix.

This only works if you know your baseline. Write down your filter pressure with a clean filter, at your normal pump speed, with valves in their usual position. Without that number "low pressure" means nothing. And treat it as a strong clue, not proof: suction air leaks, a partly blocked suction line, and a poor prime all produce low pressure too. Gauges also stick and die, so tap it and consider whether it has been reading the same number suspiciously long.

Clearing a Clog

Before you touch anything: shut off the breaker, not just the timer, and verify power is actually off. Let the motor cool. Release filter pressure with the air relief valve and close suction and return valves so you do not flood the pad. Leave the motor's electrical compartment alone unless you are qualified; capacitors can hold a charge. If any of this is outside your comfort zone, call a pro.

Access depends on the pump. Some designs let you reach the impeller eye through the strainer housing, though you often can only get at the front of it that way. Most require pulling the motor assembly off the wet end, undoing a band clamp or bolts and sliding the motor and seal plate out with the impeller still attached.

Pull debris out of the vanes with a stiff wire or your fingers, then turn the impeller by hand to confirm it moves freely. Some drag from the shaft seal is normal.

On reassembly, inspect the housing gasket and o-rings and replace anything flattened or cracked. Use a pool-rated silicone lubricant rather than petroleum grease, which degrades some seal materials. Prime the pump properly before running it, and never let it run dry.

Replacing One

Order by pump model and impeller part number. Do not order by the horsepower printed on the motor label.

Impellers within one pump family are sized to a particular motor rating, and manufacturers distinguish them by service factor horsepower rather than the marketing HP number. Two motors both labeled 1.5 HP can have different service factors, and "uprated" versus "full-rated" models muddy it further. In some lines a wrong impeller will physically fit and simply perform badly or load the motor incorrectly, which is worse than it not fitting at all. Some impellers are also paired with a specific diffuser and should be replaced together.

Find the model number on the pump label and match the manufacturer's part number for your exact configuration.

The screw that ruins afternoons. Many pumps retain the impeller with a left-hand threaded screw, meaning you turn it clockwise to loosen. Not all of them, though. Some use standard threads and some have no screw at all. Confirm your model before applying real force, because stripping that head turns a short job into a long one.

While you have it apart, look at the shaft seal. Replacing it now costs a few dollars. Not replacing it is the usual reason people take the same pump apart twice in one season.

Wear and Damage

Impellers are typically plastic and wear slowly. What actually kills them:

  • Cracked or snapped vanes from something hard getting through
  • Erosion from repeatedly passing sand, common after a sand filter lateral fails
  • Cavitation pitting from chronic suction starvation
  • Heat deformation from running dry or overheating
  • A stripped hub or stripped threads on the shaft

A worn impeller bleeds off flow gradually and quietly. If a pump has never quite performed like it used to and everything else checks out, it is a fair suspect. Check the diffuser at the same time, since a cracked one causes similar symptoms and gets blamed on the impeller.

Cavitation

If the pump rattles like it is full of gravel, that is often cavitation. The impeller is moving water faster than the suction side can supply it, so vapor bubbles form and then collapse violently against the vanes. It chews up the impeller over time.

Usual causes: a clogged strainer basket, a closed or partly closed valve, a suction-side air leak, low water level, undersized or long suction plumbing, very warm water, or a variable-speed pump set to a higher RPM than the plumbing can feed.

Find the restriction and fix it. Running a cavitating pump is just slowly destroying the part this page is about.
