What It Does
Muriatic acid lowers pH and total alkalinity. Any acid addition big enough to move pH will pull TA down with it, because alkalinity is the buffer that resists pH change in the first place. What you actually control is not which number moves, but what you do afterward.
Lowering Alkalinity Without Tanking pH
Here is the part that confuses people. Acid lowers both pH and TA. Aeration (fountains, spa jets, a return pointed up at the surface) drives off carbon dioxide, which raises pH back up while leaving TA roughly where the acid left it.
So if your TA is high and you want it down without living at a corrosive pH:
- Add acid to bring pH down to about 7.2. You can go closer to 7.0, but do not park there.
- Aerate until pH climbs back to 7.6-7.8.
- Repeat. Each cycle knocks TA down another notch.
If TA is already fine and you only want to nudge pH, use a smaller dose and skip the aeration.
Do not hold the pool at very low pH. Extended time below 7.2 is hard on plaster, metal fittings, and heater components. The low reading in this cycle is a stop on the way, not a destination.
How Much to Add
Dose depends on pool volume, current pH, and current TA. High alkalinity resists change and takes more acid to move.
Use a pool calculator instead of guessing, then add about three quarters of what it tells you and retest. Adding more acid is easy. Undoing an overdose means adding a base and chasing the water back the other way.
How to Add It
- Pump running. Circulation is what keeps acid from settling on the floor.
- Pour slowly in front of a return jet, moving along the edge as you pour.
- Never pour into the skimmer. That sends concentrated acid straight through your pump, heater, and filter.
- Do not add acid and chlorine at the same time or in the same spot. Separate them by at least 30-60 minutes with good circulation.
- On a vinyl liner, dilute in a plastic bucket of water first (acid into water, never water into acid) and distribute widely. Never let acid sit against the liner.
- Retest pH after 30-60 minutes of circulation. Give TA longer, often later that day, since readings settle as the water finishes mixing and outgassing.
Safety
Always follow the product label and Safety Data Sheet. Full-strength muriatic acid gives off corrosive fumes, burns skin, eyes, and lungs, and eats concrete, metal, and fabric on contact.
- Gloves, splash goggles, closed shoes. Actual goggles, not sunglasses.
- Acid into water, never water into acid.
- Never mix with chlorine products. Acid combined with liquid chlorine or cal hypo releases chlorine gas, which can be fatal in an enclosed space.
- Store upright and sealed in a cool, ventilated spot, out of direct sun, away from chlorine, metal tools, and equipment. Fumes from a loose cap will rust everything in a shed. Do not shelve it under your chlorine.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Keep a hose handy. Skin contact: flush 15 minutes. Eye contact: flush 15 minutes and get medical attention.
- Small spills: neutralize carefully with baking soda, expect fizzing and heat, then rinse with plenty of water. Large spills: ventilate, get clear, and follow the SDS and local emergency guidance.
Muriatic vs. Dry Acid
Dry acid (sodium bisulfate) is granular, much safer to handle, and lowers pH and TA the same way. The tradeoff is sulfates.
Sulfates build up and only come back down through water replacement: drain and refill, backwashing, splashout. At high levels they raise the risk of long-term plaster deterioration and corrosion of metal components, which is why plaster pools and saltwater setups usually avoid dry acid for routine use.
If handling liquid acid safely is realistic for you, muriatic is the better long-term choice. If it genuinely is not, dry acid is a fair trade. An occasional bag will not wreck a pool.
Spas
Same chemistry, far smaller volume, so doses are tiny. Dilute in a bucket and add a little at a time.
Aeration is unavoidable in a spa because the jets are aerators. That is why spa pH drifts upward constantly and why you will be reaching for acid more often than you expect.
