Scale: What It Is, How to Prevent It, and How to Remove It

Scale is the crusty, chalky, or crystalline deposit that forms when minerals, mostly calcium carbonate, come out of solution and bond to pool surfaces and equipment. It's the over-saturation side of water balance: when your water holds more calcium than it can keep dissolved, the excess precipitates out as scale. Left alone, it roughens plaster, can contribute to cloudy water, fouls filters and heaters, and shortens the life of salt cells.

What causes scale?

Scale forms when water becomes over-saturated with calcium carbonate. The main drivers are:

  • High calcium hardness: too much dissolved calcium in the water.
  • High pH: the single biggest lever; carbonate scale forms readily as pH climbs high.
  • High total alkalinity: part of the carbonate balance, and high alkalinity tends to drive pH upward (especially with aeration and water features).
  • High water temperature: heat increases calcium carbonate's scaling tendency, which is why heaters, salt cells, and spas scale first.

Pool chemists describe this balance with the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), which combines pH, temperature, calcium hardness, alkalinity, and total dissolved solids into a single number. A positive index means scale-forming water; a negative index means the water is aggressive toward calcium-based surfaces and can etch plaster and grout. The goal is to keep it near zero, slightly negative if you're actively fighting scale.

Is it scale or a stain?

They look different and have different causes:

  • Scale is raised. You can usually feel it. It's white, gray, or tan, crusty or crystalline, and sits on top of the surface. It's a mineral deposit.
  • A stain is flat. You usually can't feel it. It's typically colored (brown, green, blue-gray, rust) and is usually caused by metals like iron or copper, not calcium. Metal stains are handled with a sequestrant and stain treatment, not scale removal.

A quick test: carefully place a few drops of muriatic acid on the deposit (wear gloves and eye protection, and rinse afterward). Scale (calcium carbonate) will fizz and foam; a metal stain won't react. Note that some deposits are mixed, scale plus metal staining, so combine the acid test with how the deposit looks and feels.

How to prevent scale

Prevention is almost entirely about water balance:

  1. Keep pH in range (around 7.2 to 7.6, never letting it drift high). This is the most important lever, since high pH is the most common cause of scale.
  2. Keep total alkalinity controlled. A common range is 80 to 120 ppm, but salt-water pools often run better on the lower end (around 60 to 90 ppm) because high alkalinity drives pH up and accelerates scaling.
  3. Keep calcium hardness in range (generally 250 to 400 ppm for plaster pools; lower for vinyl and fiberglass). If your fill water is very hard, manage the overall balance rather than chasing a single number.
  4. Watch your fill water. Hard tap water adds calcium with every top-off and every evaporation cycle.
  5. Use a sequestrant as insurance, especially with hard fill water or a salt system. Sequestrants are primarily for controlling metals, but many also slow calcium scale formation. They don't replace good water balance and won't remove scale that has already formed.

How to remove existing scale

  • Rebalance the water first. Bring pH and alkalinity toward the low end of range so the water stops depositing more scale and slowly begins to redissolve what's there.
  • Brush regularly. A stiff nylon brush removes light scale at the waterline. A pumice stone works only on uncoated plaster. Test a small area first, and never use it on vinyl, fiberglass, painted surfaces, polished stone, or glass tile.
  • Use a scale remover product for broader buildup, following label directions.
  • For heavy scale, tile and surfaces may need professional acid treatment or, in extreme cases, a drain and acid wash, which carries real risk to the finish and is best left to a pro.

Salt cells scale fastest

Saltwater chlorine generators are especially prone to scaling because the chlorine-generation process creates a high-pH microenvironment right at the cell plates. When you see scale on the plates, the standard fix is a soak in a mild acid solution: mix 4 parts water to 1 part muriatic acid, always adding acid to water, never water to acid, or use a dedicated cell cleaner. Soak only as long as needed and rinse thoroughly. Treat acid cleaning as a last resort after a plain hose rinse, because repeated acid cleans shorten cell life. Always check your manufacturer's instructions first. Some modern cells have self-cleaning (reverse-polarity) cycles but still need occasional manual cleaning in hard water.

Spas and heaters

Because heat increases scaling tendency, spas and pool heaters show scale first. In a spa, the combination of high temperature, aeration (which raises pH), and a small water volume makes balance swing fast, so check and adjust more often than you would for a pool.
