Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filter Powder — Safe Handling Guide
DE powder is one of the most effective filter media available for pool owners — but it requires careful handling. This guide covers what every DIY homeowner needs to know before opening that bag.
What Is DE Powder?
Diatomaceous Earth is a fine, chalky powder made from the fossilized remains of microscopic algae called diatoms. When loaded into a DE filter, it coats the filter grids and acts as a microscopic sieve — capable of filtering particles down to 2–5 microns, far finer than sand or cartridge filters. It is the same material used in food-grade and industrial filtration applications, but pool-grade DE is not food-grade and must be handled accordingly.
Before You Handle DE Powder
IMPORTANT: RESPIRATORY HAZARD — WEAR A DUST MASK
DE powder is a fine silica-containing dust. Inhaling it repeatedly over time can cause lung irritation and, with prolonged unprotected exposure, serious respiratory conditions. Always wear an N95 or better respirator mask when measuring, pouring, or cleaning up DE powder. Do not handle DE powder in an enclosed space without ventilation.
IMPORTANT: EYE AND SKIN PROTECTION REQUIRED
DE powder is abrasive at the microscopic level. Wear safety glasses or goggles and disposable gloves when handling. If DE contacts your eyes, flush immediately with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
IMPORTANT: KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS
Store DE powder in its original sealed bag or a sealed container, out of reach of children and pets. DE is harmful if ingested in quantity and should never be confused with food-grade diatomaceous earth products.
Considering a Easier Handling Alternative to DE? Try Jack's Fiber Stuff!
A alternative to DE, safer to handle is Jack's Fiber Stuff which can replace DE, uses cellulose (fibrous plant material) to filter your water. We provide a handy calculator to help you determine how much you will need.
Safe Handling Steps
| Step | What To Do |
| 1. Gear Up First | Put on your N95 mask, safety glasses, and gloves before opening the bag. |
| 2. Mix With Water | Never pour dry DE powder directly into the skimmer or filter. Always pre-mix the measured dose with water in a bucket to form a slurry before adding it to the system. This minimizes airborne dust and ensures even distribution across the filter grids. |
| 3. Measure Accurately | Use the dosage rate on your filter manufacturer's label — typically expressed in pounds per square foot of filter area. Over-loading DE restricts flow; under-loading leaves grids uncoated and reduces filtration. Consult your filter manual for the exact amount of surface area. |
| 4. Add With Pump Running | Pour the slurry slowly into the skimmer with the pump running on filter mode. The suction draws the DE through the system and coats the grids evenly. |
| 5. Clean Up Carefully | Wipe up any spilled dry powder with a damp cloth — do not sweep or blow dry DE, as this re-suspends it in the air. Dispose of used DE (from backwashing) per your local municipality's guidelines. Do not dump spent DE directly into storm drains. |
| 6. Store Properly | Reseal the bag tightly after each use. Store in a cool, dry location away from moisture. Wet DE clumps and will not distribute evenly across filter grids. |
Poolaroo Pro Tip
When performing a full filter teardown and grid cleaning, inspect each grid for tears or holes before recharging with DE. A damaged grid allows DE to pass directly into the pool — you'll see a white cloudy plume returning through the returns. Replace any torn grid before adding fresh DE. Keeping a spare grid on hand saves you a same-day trip to the store mid-maintenance.
