CE-Clarifier is our chitosan-based clarifier that is ideal for swimming pools and fountains. When we were formulating our clarifier, we knew we wanted it to be different than any other clarifier out there. So we added our commercial-grade CV-600 enzyme to the mix.

CV-600 enzyme boosts CE-Clarifier’s strength in a big way; it breaks down and digests non-living organics, grease, and oils. These oxidants are broken down into carbon dioxide and off-gassed out of the pool...not sent to the filter. Managing non-living organic waste is our Second Pillar of Proactive Pool Care, and very important for water clarity.

Removing bather waste and oils helps clear the way for the chitosan to attract debris (like pollen) and bind them into larger sized particles to be filtered out. The result is sparkling clean water.

Buyer's Guide: Pool Clarifiers for Water Clarity

Which Clarifier Type Do You Need?

Tier 1: Natural Chitosan Blends

  • Best For: Routine Maintenance & Sensitive Skin.
  • How it Works: Uses natural polymers (crustacean shells) to gently capture oils and dust.
  • Performance: Excellent for removing oils and scum lines; prevents filter clogging.
  • Frequency: Weekly.

Tier 2: Synthetic Polymer Coagulants

  • Best For: Cloudy Water Correction.
  • How it Works: Uses strong cationic polymers (e.g., PolyDADMAC) to aggressively bond fine debris.
  • Performance: Fast-acting clearing for hazy water after rain or parties.
  • Frequency: As needed or Bi-weekly.

Tier 3: Color-Changing or "Blue" Clarifiers

  • Best For: Aesthetic Enhancement.
  • How it Works: Combines standard clarification with optical brighteners.
  • Performance: Makes dull water look vibrant blue while clearing particles.
  • Frequency: Special occasions or Weekly.

Tier 4: Flocculants (The Heavy Duty Option)

  • Best For: "Swamp" Recovery or Zero Visibility.
  • How it Works: Drops all debris to the floor immediately (Bypasses filter).
  • Performance: Clears the worst water overnight, but requires manual vacuuming to waste.
  • Frequency: Emergency use only.

Essential Pairing
Pool Water Balancers for Proper Chemical Balance

Clarifiers rely on electrical charges to work. If the pool pH is too high or low, the chemical reaction is severely hampered. Balance the water first.

Filter Cleaning Chemicals for All Types of Pool & Spa Filters

Clarifiers send debris to the filter. A chemically cleaned filter cartridge or backwashed sand filter captures these clumps much more efficiently.

Enzyme Treatments for Pool and Spa Care

While clarifiers clump physical particles, enzymes digest non-living organic oils (sunscreen, sweat). Using them together provides the ultimate water clarity.

Technician's Guide: Pool Clarifiers for Water Clarity +

What Are Pool Clarifiers?
Pool and spa clarifiers are the "polishers" of water chemistry. While your sanitizer kills bacteria and your filter removes visible debris, microscopic particles—like dead algae, body oils, lotions, and fine dust—can pass right through the filter, leaving your water looking dull or hazy. Clarifiers solve this by acting as a magnet for these tiny contaminants, restoring the water's sparkle.

How Do They Work?
Clarifiers utilize a principle called coagulation. Most contaminants in pool water carry a negative electrical charge. Clarifiers introduce positively charged polymer chains (often made from synthetic polymers or natural chitosan). These positive charges attract the negative particles, bonding them together into larger clumps. Once these clumps are large enough, your filter can easily trap them, or they can be vacuumed away.

Why Use Them?
Think of clarifiers as high-definition tuning for your pool. They turn "clean" water into "brilliant" water. They are essential after heavy bather loads, rainstorms, or an algae bloom treatment to restore depth and clarity. Regular maintenance doses can also help your filter work more efficiently by grouping debris before it clogs the system media.

Common Questions +

Q: How often should I use a pool clarifier?
A: For maintenance, a small weekly dose is standard to keep water sparkling. For curative needs (fixing cloudy water), use a higher "clean-up" dose as directed on the bottle. Always run the pump for at least 24 hours after application to ensure circulation.

Q: Can I use too much clarifier?
A: Yes. It is critical to follow dosing instructions exactly. Overdosing can cause "re-stabilization," where the excess clarifier reverses the electrical charge of the particles, causing them to repel each other again and making the water cloudier than before.

Q: What is the difference between Clarifier and Flocculant?
A: A Clarifier coagulates particles so they remain suspended long enough to be trapped by your filter. A Flocculant creates heavy clumps that sink to the floor of the pool, which must then be manually vacuumed to waste. Clarifiers are easier to use; Flocculants are for extreme cloudiness.

Q: Will a clarifier help with algae?
A: It will not kill algae (that is the job of chlorine or algaecide), but it is excellent for clearing up the dead algae particles that linger and cloud the water after you have shocked the pool and killed the bloom.

Q: Do clarifiers affect pH or alkalinity?
A: Most modern polymer and chitosan-based clarifiers are pH-neutral and will not significantly impact your water balance. However, your pH must be balanced (7.4–7.6) before adding the clarifier for the polymers to activate effectively.
