When installing the replacement union nut, hand-tighten first and confirm the union seats squarely before applying final torque. Overtightening a plastic union nut can crack the fitting — snug and leak-free is the target, not maximum force. Inspect the union O-ring at the same time; a worn O-ring is the most common cause of leaks at this connection and should be replaced whenever the nut is removed.
