This O-ring seals the strainer housing lid on the pump, maintaining a watertight closure that allows the pump to hold prime and prevents air from entering the suction side of the system. Replacing a worn, cracked, or flattened strainer O-ring is a straightforward first step when a pump loses prime or shows signs of air leakage at the strainer lid.
