Inspect the strainer basket each time you clean it — fine cracks near the rim or base can allow debris to bypass the basket entirely and reach the impeller. Replace the basket at the first sign of cracking or deformation. When reinstalling, ensure the basket seats squarely in the housing before securing the lid; a cocked or lifted basket won't filter effectively and may rattle during operation.
