About This Item
The Hayward Heat Exchanger Assembly (FDXLHXA1400) is the OEM replacement heat exchanger for the Universal H-Series H400FD gas heater, restoring the heater's core thermal transfer function with a factory-original component.
IMPORTANT: PROFESSIONAL SERVICE REQUIRED
Gas and electrical heater components must be serviced by a licensed pool professional or qualified HVAC technician. Do not attempt to service gas or high-voltage components without proper certification.
The heat exchanger is the primary thermal transfer component in the H400FD heater, circulating pool water through cupro nickel tubing where heat generated by the burner assembly is transferred to the water. Hayward's cupro nickel construction provides resistance to salt water and chemical corrosion, making this assembly suitable for both chlorine and salt water pool applications. The "totally managed" water flow design optimises contact time between pool water and the heat source for efficient energy transfer at the H400FD's 400,000 BTU output rating.

Poolaroo Pro Tip
Before installing the new heat exchanger, flush the heater's water circuit to clear any scale or debris that may have contributed to the original failure. Inspect the header gaskets and any associated O-rings at the same time — replacing worn seals during this service interval avoids having to re-open the heater shortly after. Because this is an internal gas appliance component, all installation and commissioning must be performed by a licensed pool professional or qualified HVAC technician.
