When replacing the strainer cover, inspect the lid O-ring at the same time. A worn or flattened O-ring is a common source of air leaks at the pump lid that can cause the pump to lose prime. Replace the O-ring if it shows any cracking, flattening, or deformation, and apply a silicone-based lubricant before reseating it to ensure a proper seal and easier future removal.
