The Pentair Union Nut C Clip (178732Z) is the OEM replacement retaining clip for the union nut fittings used on Sta-Rite POSI-CLEAR RP, Clean & Clear RP, System:2 Modular Media, and SEP Series Separation Tank filtration equipment.
This clip locks the union nut in place at the plumbing connection point on the filter housing. A missing, cracked, or deformed C clip allows the union nut to back off under system pressure, resulting in leaks at the filter connection. Replacing a damaged clip restores a secure, leak-free union connection without replacing the full union assembly.

When reassembling a union connection on these filter models, inspect both the union nut and the C clip groove for wear or deformation before reinstalling. A clip that has been over-expanded — often from forceful removal — will not seat securely and can work loose under pressure. Replace both the clip and the union nut if the groove shows signs of cracking or rounding. Always hand-tighten union nuts before applying tool pressure; over-torquing is the most common cause of C clip and union nut damage on these filter lines.
