Always lubricate this O-ring with a silicone-based lubricant before installation. We carry the Pentair R172351 Lifeguard Silicone Lubricant — the OEM-matched product for Pentair equipment.
This O-ring maintains the pressure seal within the SM and SMBW 4000 Series D.E. filter housing. A worn or cracked O-ring is a common cause of water leaks at filter joints — replacing it restores a watertight seal and returns the filter to proper operating pressure.

Before installing this O-ring, clean the seating groove thoroughly to remove any debris, old lubricant residue, or hardened material from the previous O-ring. Apply a thin, even coat of silicone-based lubricant — Pentair R172351 Lifeguard Silicone Lubricant is the OEM-matched option — before seating the new O-ring. Never use petroleum-based lubricants; they degrade rubber O-rings and will cause premature failure. Inspect the O-ring seating surface for nicks or corrosion at the same time — a damaged groove will defeat even a new O-ring.
