Protect Your Cover (And Your Wallet)

A pool cover is an expensive investment, but water accumulation is its silent killer. Rain, melting snow, and slush add thousands of pounds of pressure to your cover, stretching the fabric, stressing the anchors, and creating a drowning hazard for pets or small animals.

Cover Pumps are the "kidneys" of your winter ecosystem. They sit atop your solid safety or winter cover and actively remove standing water. By keeping the cover light and dry, you prevent tearing, extend the cover’s lifespan by years, and eliminate the stagnant swamp that breeds spring mosquitoes. Whether you choose a simple manual pump or a "set-it-and-forget-it" automatic version, this is the single most important tool for surviving the off-season.

Common Questions +

1. What is the difference between Manual and Automatic pumps?
A Manual pump requires you to plug it in to start pumping and unplug it immediately when the water is gone (running dry can burn out the motor). An Automatic pump uses sensors to detect water levels; it turns itself on when water accumulates and shuts off when the job is done.

2. Can I leave an Automatic pump on the cover all winter?
Generally, yes. Automatic pumps are designed to stay on the cover to manage rain and snowmelt continuously. However, during deep freezes (below 32°F/0°C), it is often safer to pull the pump inside to prevent the discharge hose from freezing and cracking.

3. Where should I place the pump?
Place the pump in the center of the pool or wherever water naturally puddles the deepest. You can use a standard pool pole to gently slide it into position without walking on the cover.

4. Will these pumps remove leaves and debris?
No. Cover pumps are designed for water only. They have intake screens to block leaves, but if your cover is covered in heavy sludge, you must scoop the debris out first. A clogged screen will starve the pump and stop it from working.

5. How fast does the pump need to be (GPH)?
GPH stands for "Gallons Per Hour." A standard 350 GPH pump is perfect for most residential pools. If you live in an area with heavy, rapid rainfall or have a very large pool cover, upgrading to 800+ GPH ensures the water is removed before it can weigh down the cover.
