About This Item
The Pentair Plug (Sand Removal) (24900-0503Z) is the OEM replacement sand removal plug for the Pentair System 3 filter family, including the SD Series D.E., Modular D.E. (SMD Series), Modular Media Filter, and Sand Filter lines.
This plug seals the drain port at the base of the filter tank, allowing the vessel to hold water and filter media during normal operation. When it's time to drain and flush the tank — for sand changes, media replacement, or winterization — removing this plug allows the tank to empty completely. A failed or missing drain plug will cause the filter to lose water from the tank base, preventing the system from maintaining pressure.

Compatibility is based on Pentair parts documentation and available OEM records. This is not an exhaustive list. For certainty, verify the part number in your equipment's manual or on the original part itself before ordering.
Pro Tip
When draining your System 3 filter for sand or media changes, inspect the drain plug threads and the mating tank port for wear or cracking before reinstalling. If the plug shows any sign of stripping or the tank port is damaged, replace the plug now — a slow drain leak at the base of the tank is easy to miss until it causes a pressure loss or media loss. Match part number 24900-0503Z to the number molded on your existing plug before ordering.
