About This Item
The Pentair 24901-0003 is the OEM replacement lateral for the Pentair (formerly Sta-Rite) System 3 Sand Filter, Model S8S70. If your filter is channeling water without proper filtration or sand is passing through to the pool, a cracked or broken lateral is the likely cause.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: 16 LATERALS REQUIRED PER FILTER
This listing is for a single lateral. The S8S70 filter requires 16 laterals for a complete lateral assembly. Inspect all laterals when the filter is open — replacing only the visibly damaged ones while leaving aged laterals in place is a common cause of repeat failures.
The lateral is the slotted distribution arm that sits at the base of the filter's underdrain hub. It holds the sand bed in place while allowing filtered water to pass through to the return line. A cracked lateral allows sand to bypass the filter media and enter the pool return — the most reliable indicator that one or more laterals need replacement.

Pro Tip
When the filter is open for lateral replacement, run your fingers along each lateral's full length — hairline cracks near the hub connection are the most common failure point and are easy to miss on a visual check alone. Since all 16 laterals share the same age and service history, replacing the full set at once is the more cost-effective approach compared to a piecemeal repair that brings you back to the same job within a season.
