Poolaroo Notes

Our own notes about this product — insights from us and our customers.

While this is a Pentair OEM product, this product works with almost any sand filter as it is just a sand filter suction device.

The Pentair Sand Vac (542090) is a Venturi-powered extraction tool that turns the miserable, back-breaking job of changing pool filter sand into a fast, hands-free process. Stop scraping your knuckles trying to scoop out heavy, wet sludge with a plastic cup.

What It Is

  • A Venturi Vacuum: It contains no moving parts and requires no electricity. It relies entirely on the physics of water pressure to do the heavy lifting, with just your garden hose.
  • Universal Fit: Attaches directly to any standard garden hose and a typical pool discharge or backwash hose.
  • Purpose-Built Design: The wide mouth and internal jetting are specifically calibrated to lift dense #20 silica sand, Zeosand, or glass media without clogging.

What Comes With It

  • The Pentair OEM Sand-Vac Head
  • 9 ft of 1-1/2" Exhaust Hose (for nearby area emptying, like yard)
  • 4 ft of 1-1/2" Exhaust Hose (for bucket empty)
  • Instructions
  • Storage Box

How It Works

It operates on the Venturi principle—using high-pressure water to create a powerful localized vacuum.

  • Connect: Attach your garden hose to the water intake and your discharge hose to the exhaust port.
  • Submerge: Leave the dirty water in your filter tank. The vacuum needs liquid to create a fluid sand slurry.
  • Plunge: Push the vacuum head straight down into the center of the old sand bed.
  • Turn it on: Open your garden hose spigot. As the fresh water jets through the narrow chamber inside the tool, it creates a powerful pressure drop that instantly sucks up the heavy sand and blasts it out the exhaust tube.

Instructions For Use

  1. If you have a side mounted valve present, set it to CLOSED to prevent water from emptying from the pipe while cleaning the filter.
  2. Remove the top filling port of the sand filter.
  3. Fill the tank to the top with water (from the hose you are using).  You need water present in tank to help suction the sand.
  4. Connect the standard garden hose male connection to the sand vac head.
  5. Get your catchment buckets ready or the area where you will put the waste sand & water.  Note if using buckets, you may want someone to assist while one person vacuums and another person changes the hose to another bucket.  This second person can also turn on/off the hose.
  6. For areas, ensure if either bucket or area that the hose tilt is always downward/sloped down.  Any upslope may cause sand to build up if it cannot overcome the water pressure from the hose.  Remember gravity will work for you or against.
  7. Turn on the hose to start suction - the vac will self-prime by Venturi suction action.
  8. Start suctioning the bottom of the sand in the filter with one hand and scoop it into the vac head, using stirring motions but be careful as you get down not to damage the riser and feeder tubes at the bottom of the filter.
  9. If one person, turn off the hose as the bucket is filled and switch them out or empty them.
  10. As the sand is emptied, position the vac head at the bottom of the filter to complete emptying of excess water from the filter tank.
  11. Remove the vac head and hose.  Recommend to flush the vac head and hose with fresh water to remove any particulate.  Let it air out and dry before storing for 24 hours.
  12. Your tank is now ready for service!

What You Need To Use It Properly

  • Standard connected garden hose to provide suction
  • Catchment buckets to hold the waste water & sand or a nearby area for emptying
  • A dirty, filled sand filter you want to clean out!

Pro Tip

Before using the Sand Vac, shut off the pump and relieve any pressure in the filter system. Have a suitable waste container or drain point ready — the Sand Vac moves sand quickly, and 10 minutes of output adds up. If you're replacing sand media at the same time, inspect the laterals at the bottom of the tank while it's empty; replacing a cracked lateral now avoids another full drain-down later.
